Poetry performed...

Watch B. Zephaniah's performance of "Rong Radio".

Enjoy the audio of My Mistress's Eye by W. Shakespeare

and of If (video) by Rudyard Kipling

How effective is poetry when performed or recited for us? What are the implications in L2 teaching?

I love the three things you sent us. They are great sources of inspiration, wow! such a log time I haven't listened to something so good!
"Benjamin Zephaniah - Rong Radio" is excellent to teach about media and how it creates/modifies our "reality" if we don't have a critical way of thinking.
This type of topics/resources for L2 teaching can help us to encourage students to develop their own pieces of art, or even more, to arouse their passion for the arts in different areas.

I enjoyed the material you sent us. I have listened to Benjamin Zephaniah before in a workshop I attended. Seeing his performance on a video was really inspired at that moment. We were asked to prepare a literature project for our students, and the results were great.
In my opinion poetry can be more appealing if it is recited or performed, especially for adolescents. Our students can get involved in a more valuable way. They can be motivated by this kind of works to create their own writing pieces.

Thank you VerĂ³nica and Gisela for your postings!

I'm glad you consider poetry as powerful as any other genre... And provided it is presented appropriately, so very useful in our classrooms!!

I liked listening to the sonnet, it seems to me that

when poetry is recited, it comes alive, I mean, we can

forget about the writing and let our imagination fly

away if we focus ourselves on the listening. I had

analized this sonnet in Literature some time ago, but

now that I listened to it again without focusing on the

way it is written, it is even more enjoyable!
I liked listening to the Rong Radio, as it shows clearly

the reality. It can be used with teenagers to help them

realize how strong and powerful the media is that can

makes us believe what they want us to believe and does

not allow us to have a free mind and a free way of

thinking. This poem is a good resourse to let teenagers see reality with a critical eye.
All in all, I feel that poetry is meant to be read, but

just the first time, then it will be more valuable not

only for students, but also for teachers to see poetry

coming alive either by being recited or performed.
