Internet Safety

Task 1:

Read the following report: Safer Children in a Digital World . You can also read the full report

Safer Children in a Digital World is an excellent report on how the Internet and video games affect young people. The report looks at:

o The kinds of things that people can see or experience on the internet and in video games that may affect them – for example extreme violence in games, or bullying over the internet.

o What research or evidence there is about how children and young people might be affected by these kinds of things.

o And, the different ways you and your parents can make sure you are safe when online or playing video games. This was to see whether more can be done to make them safer for you.

- What are your thoughts after reading the Safer Children in a Digital World report?

Using the Internet and online communication tools can be a hugely rewarding experience for young people and adults alike. However, there are some potential risks that we would like to encourage our learners to avoid.

• What risks could there be for young people on the internet?
• What are we asking young people to stay safe from?

Safer Children in a Digital World
This report is really incredible. It’s a potential source for teachers and parents to work on with children about how to be safe on the Internet.
Although, in this piece it is said that it is important that governments, businesses and different organizations get involved in the processes of decision making about how to keep children and teens safe from bullying over Internet and playing violent and not appropriated age rates games, I think that schools are crucial places to develop strategies to help parents to deal with the Internet. Apart from expecting from our governments a better management over these topics, adults should know what Internet is about, and in this way, help children to use it in a safer way. Because many times there are things beyond parents’ means and kids must be ready to face them up. Therefore, children should be trained in the risks they can go through.
Some of the risks young people can find on the Internet, to illustrate, could be people whose will is not necessarily to communicate and get in touch with them. Sometimes there are bullies that would try to intimidate them, insane people, or even worst, sexual abusers that pretend to be young peoples’ same ages to get information from them.
Specifically, we are asking young people to stay safe from giving personal information to unknown people, playing adults’ video games, surfing untailored websites and feeling uncertain with the things they are doing or seeing on the Internet.

Finally, I think that this phrase of the author sums up the aim of such an investigation, and our objectives(as teachers) to use it: “I just want to make sure that all protections that are available in the real world to keep you safe are present in your ‘virtual worlds’, too.”

In my opinion, the Internet is useful for a variety of purposes. Children and young people can use it to get information for school, communicate between them, but there are, as the author says, some risks in its use. They can meet in a chat room with some ‘dangers’, as giving personal information to adults that they do not know, bullying or rude contents for their age, like pop-ups.
Teachers and parents should work together informing children about the use of the Internet as well as teach them to use it correctly, I mean safely. That is visiting sites that are appropriate for their age and choosing them wisely, not giving information to people they do not know. To sum up, using the Internet in a responsible way.

As regards this question, I found the article very interesting. I read many items which are great to have in mind when you have children to be taken care of. I think it is true sometimes parents do not really know how to help their children while they surf the web or they play video games. All in all, I trully think this article is a way of showing parents and people who work with children how to help them to surf the web safely and how to choose the most appropiate games for their own good.

Hi everyone! I have read both comments.
As regards Gise`s comment, I agree with her because internet is a very useful source and we can use it for different purposes as ahe says. And I also agree on the fact that helping children how to surf the web, is not only a teachers issue but also a family issue. I think that teaching is not done by school or the family, it is always a question of working together in a collaborative way.
As regards Vero`s comment, I agree with her when she comments that schools are crucial places to develop strategies to help parents to deal with the Internet. I also believe the goverment should help in this matter but as a global campaign as the posters that appear in the article and that schools should work in this in a more detail way.

Thanks!

After reading both comments, I can say that I agree with Gaby when she said that ‘parents do not know how to help their children while they surf the web or they play video games.’ I also agree with Veronica when she commented on schools as crucial places to develop strategies to help parents to deal with the internet. From my point of view, it would be positive if schools can organize some kind of workshops in which not only parents but also teachers and psychologists can work together and learn how to deal with this issue.
